Job Title: Visual Media EditorLocation: The Irish Times HQ (Hybrid Working) Closing Date for applications: Close of Business 14th June 2024 The Irish Times wishes to appoint a Visual Media Editor. This new post will oversee the future development of video, photography and related media as key elements of our journalism, and manage the day-to-day running of a newly created department. The successful candidate will have a clear vision of the role of photography and video at The Irish Times – with a particular emphasis on digital publishing. They will be able to articulate this vision to the team and to other colleagues. The key elements of the role are:  Leadership: The Visual Media Editor will lead and motivate a newly created section – composed of photographers, videographers and editors – to creative excellence. The Visual Media Editor will be supported by a deputy and desk editors. Clear goals and strong teamwork are key elements for success.Management: The Visual Media Editor is tasked with reducing administration and prioritising creative output in this new department, which was previously two separate units. They will assess workflows, technology tools and volume of output to ensure the efficient running of the section. The Visual Media Editor will have final responsibility for rostering and planning, and attending editorial meetings to keep colleagues informed of the department’s work. Creativity: This is one of the most creative areas of The Irish Times – a multi-award-winning group of videographers and photographers. The Visual Media Editor must blend ambitious innovation with day-to-day journalistic needs. With the team they will commission, edit and publish photos and videos, ensuring high production values and taking our visual journalism to new heights.Impact: The Visual Media Editor will be responsible not only for the production of visual journalism, but also its promotion online. They will work closely with the audience unit to maximise the impact of video and photography. They will work with the digital development and technology teams to improve the user experience for consumers of Irish Times video and photography. Staff in the Visual Media Department will be familiar with analytics and use these to serve our audiences. The ideal candidate will possess: visual flair and imagination; sound journalistic judgment; organisation skills; comfort with new technologies; experience in management and motivation of staff; a record of reorganisation; a proven ability to deliver projects. A background in visual media production is an advantage but not a necessity.   The Visual Media Editor must follow the guiding principles of The Irish Times Trust, and preserve our reputation for journalism of the highest quality.
