The role will be an employee of Beacon Hospital, and commit to successfully undertake a two-year funded MSc in Clinical Perfusion Science in association with University Bristol, leading to full registration with The College of Clinical Perfusion Scientists GB and Ireland. The Trainee Clinical Perfusionist, as a member of the Cardiac Services Team will learn to provide clinical and professional perfusion services as part of a multi-disciplinary team. They will also learn to provide a wide range of Perfusion Services additional to cardiopulmonary bypass to facilitate the full range of surgical techniques at Beacon Hospital. Key Responsibilities and Deliverables SummaryThe role of the Trainee Perfusionist is to attain the correct qualifications, knowledge and skills to practice as an autonomous Clinical Perfusion Scientist by the end of a 2-year training period. The two-year training programme will be funded by Beacon Hospital. Upon completion of training and successfully achieving an MSc in Clinical Perfusion Science, the role holder will achieve the title of Clinical Perfusionist, and will be contractually required to complete a minimum of three years post qualification employment with Beacon Hospital.Training is undertaken in the clinical environment at Beacon Hospital and supported with distance learning at Bristol University to obtain an MSc in Perfusion Science (more details available from https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/taught/msc-clinical-perfusion-science/#:~:text=The%20MSc%20in%20Clinical%20Perfusion,research%20relating%20to%20perfusion%20science. All cases will be done with a named supervisor.Assist with perfusion related procedures and services outside the confines of cardiac theatres when and wherever required for example emergencies on the ward, Cath lab and Intensive care.With the assistance of a qualified perfusionist, determine and execute appropriate extracorporeal support using a range of perfusion related devices.Learn to clinically manage the use of Intra-Aortic Counter-Pulsation catheters Learn to clinically manage the use of Cell Salvage Machines including the use of autologous platelet rich plasmapheresis and providing expertise to nursing staff on intensive care if required.Ensure application of aseptic technique throughout clinical procedures and safely dispose of all infected/contaminated disposables.To take precautions to protect the patients, other staff and yourself from the spread of infection within the workplace.Ensure quality control, calibration, maintenance, and servicing of all medical equipment within the perfusion department, ensuring to comply with the necessary reporting procedures relating to faults.Work to the quality (JCI), regulatory and professional standards governing perfusion services.Assist in the development and continual review of all departmental protocols and policies relating to clinical perfusion to reflect best practice, current health and safety legislation and changing requirements for service provision.Participate in relevant research projects and audits within or involving the perfusion department.Develop, maintain and contribute knowledge of clinical advances in specialist areas of expertise through attending local, national and international conferences and to present these findings to other members of the department where appropriate.Become familiar and confident with all point of care testing devices within the perfusion department.Communicate in an effective, clear, precise way as a key member of the cardiac multi-disciplinary team, providing and receiving complex and/or contentious information to ensure a positive patient outcome.Have an up to date knowledge of disease processes and conditions relevant to the conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass.Develop a knowledge of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of relevant cardiovascular drugs employed during and affecting cardiopulmonary bypass.Contribute to evidence based clinical practice by critically reviewing current literature and help to ensure effective delivery of the perfusion serviceEnsure that patient needs are at the centre of care delivery.Ensure that there are systems in place that mean the provision of care takes place in a suitable and safe environment. Identify clinical risks across the service and ensure that appropriate action is taken to highlight and remedy any risks identified.Undertake audit and research as required, ensuring findings are disseminated appropriately and recommendations are implemented.
