The role is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of best medical practice. As a key member of the frontline team, the Lead NCHD will demonstrate professional clinical skills and facilitate effective communication with colleagues in the hospital. The position requires a collaborative approach to the development of services and structures, embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives. Job Background/ContextThe Hermitage Clinic is a private hospital providing a full range of medical and surgical care across a broad spectrum of specialities. The role duties include:- To lead, organise and co-ordinate the work of the NCHD’s ensuring highest standards of patient care for all patients attending/admitted to the Hermitage Clinic. To ensure that the work schedules and work programmes are created to provide for the most effective and efficient deployment of staff and other resources, and are monitored systematically in the light of changes in the volume and mix of cases being referred to the Hospital. Reduce Locum costs through effective leave management and rosteringTo recommend appropriate adjustments in NCHD resources in line with the above. To work with Consultants on clinical matters and to monitor the volume and mix of cases treated against the core standards for JCI, working where necessary with the CEO, Director of Clinical Governance or Medical Advisory Committee. To establish and maintain teamwork and co-operation with the multidisciplinary team i.e. Nursing, Physiotherapy, Radiology etc. to ensure maximum benefit from co-ordinated care. To maintain and develop the highest evidence based clinical and professional standards.Coordinate the educational, audit and research activities of all NCHD’s To keep abreast of new developments, skills, technology, and current literature in order to initiate and respond to changes in the work environment, e.g. data analysis, clinical audit, research, etc. And to meet current CME requirementsTo fully embrace and utilise the Hospitals Information and Communications Technology including Meditech, PACS and any and all other applications, and to ensure full compliance in this regard with all NCHD’s without exception. To keep policies and procedures under review, with regular audit, and revise as required in the light of changing service needs. To establish and maintain links with other private and public hospital centres, both nationally and internationally, in order to promote collaboration in professional development and research. The NCHD’s work in co-operation with the Consultants and the Nursing team in all matters relating to patient care.To engage in the coordination, supervision and teaching of medical students attached to the hospitalIdentify any non-compliant behaviours and ensure it is managed appropriately in conjunction with HR policies Key Responsibilities SUMMARY OF DUTIES Clinical Assessment of Patients Patients requiring admission/readmission and/or as warranted by an unexpected change in their clinical condition. Patients attending Day Care and Out-Patient areas will be reviewed as appropriate following a discussion with the Head of Department. Ensure that out of hours NCHD’s round on patients at least at the beginning and end of every shift as well as whenever called to do so. Patient assessment should comprise of:a. Appropriate history and clinical examination, b. Appropriate investigations (e.g. CXR, ECG, Lab work-up),c. Procedural activity (e.g. blood cultures, IV cannulations and infusions, catheterisation),d. Prescribing drug therapies or other appropriate services including physiotherapy, dietician, etc.,e. Ensure that there are detailed notes in medical records including proper documentation and discharge summaries, where appropriate e.g. transfers, convalescence, and rehabilitation. f. Liaising with Consultants in charge and Senior Nursing Colleagues. Other Duties Prescribing may be required as warranted by a change in clinical condition, analgesic requirement, or as a courtesy on behalf of the Consultant staff. Ensure that comprehensive handover, with full patient rounds, has taken place at the beginning and end of each shift, (morning and night). Provide a non-routine phlebotomy service and cannulation of patients as required.Carry the cardiac arrest phone and respond to all hospital emergencies, for patients, staff and visitors administering emergency care in the absence of Anaesthetics or Consultants, and continue management until such time as the Consultant is available. To prepare and circulate a monthly Rota for all NCHD activity and distribute to appropriate department heads. This includes day NCHD’s, and all out of hours NCHD’s.To actively participate in relevant Hospital committees and task force groups.To provide training assistance and relevant Hospital policy updates to Resident Medical Officers.To closely liaise with all Hospital Consultants. To ensure all NCHD’s are orientated to Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic and have up to date mandatory training.Participate in compulsory Hospital based training i.e. Fire and Manual Handling renewal of ACLS/PALS when required etc. To establish and adopt the role of the single and sole point of contact for all issues relating to NCHD behaviour as it may impact upon other staff and vice versa. In respect of this role to establish mechanisms allowing for a clear and direct line of communications to all staff members to the Lead NCHD.To enhance communications between other Clinical areas and NCHDs.To input into the Medical Advisory Committee on matters relating to RMOTo investigate and report on any incidents in relation to NCHD’s.To appraise NCHD’s after 3 months and annually thereafter.To provide teaching sessions to other RMO’s, undergraduate Nurses and medical students as required. To carry out any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time and at the discretion of the CEO and or Director of Clinical Governance. Learning and EducationContribute to the requirements of the Medical Council practice professional development.Take personal responsibility for own professional development and keep up to date with evidence based practice and research. Attend and participate in staff development programmes on an ongoing basis and sharing knowledge with other staff members.Assist with the orientation and induction of new staff and be available to provide orientation as deemed necessary, helping them to integrate as members of the Unit team.Identify and inform the Learning and Education Team of any training and professional development requirements.Attend all mandatory training days and ensure that all mandatary training is in date.Comply with all HR system and policy requirements. Quality Improvement and Risk ManagementEnsure compliance with all relevant Hermitage Clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and relevant legislation and regulatory requirements. Participate in the continuous review and evaluation of policies, guidelines and existing practices through regular audit programmes and review engaging with the multi-disciplinary team where required.Assist in promoting a culture of continuous quality improvement across the department. Be aware of the core objectives, standards and key performance indicators for the service and contribute to the monitoring of performance against these standards.Participate in the requirements of the hospitals accreditation process.Participate in the requirements of the hospital’s risk management programmePromote the delivery of a high standard of care to all patients.
