As a JCI accredited hospital, Blackrock Clinic is a progressive and pioneering hospital in which care for the patient is central to everything we do. Role Purpose:Contribute to providing a quality clinical laboratory service tailored to the user needs.To assist in the organisation and co-ordination of the Microbiology service.Assist in the implementation and maintenance of a quality management system that meets the requirements of ISO15189 and Joint Commission International (JCI).To assist in training of Microbiology staff in the laboratory for the provision of routine services.To act as deputy for the Chief Medical Scientist when required and liaise with other senior personnel. Qualifications/Experience:Candidates must possess.a)Possess an appropriate Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences from an approved UniversityOrb)Possess the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street or the Regional Technical College, Cork awarded prior to 1994Orc) Possess a CORU recognised qualification at least equivalent to (a) or (b) aboveProfessional and technical responsibilities Perform routine work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the Pathology Manager, Senior Laboratory Staff and Consultant.Be responsible for the quality of work and carry out all duties in accordance with the clinic policy.Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information.Participate as required in the registration, custody and stock level of the laboratory reagents and other materials.Provide a safe, comprehensive service based on current standards and research; perform procedures according to established policy and procedures.Participate in quality assurance by assisting to identify recurrent problems and co-operate in data collection and problem solving through the use of the CAPA module in Q pulse.Ensure that all organisms associated with health care associated infections are communicated to the Infection Control Nurse Specialist in a timely manner.Know and practice within the legal requirements including those set down by The Academy of Medical Laboratory Science.Follow good laboratory practice in line with the quality management system and work to ISO 15189, JCI standards and INAB guidelines at all times.Personally and professionally you are accountable to the patient. You are personally accountable for your own actions at all times.Communication Skills Report relevant information verbally and in writing to appropriate personnel.Respond appropriately to user requests and questions.Communicate appropriately with colleagues and other members of the team, in a manner that avoids antagonism, reduces conflict and prevents undue anxiety.Recognise self-limitations and seek assistance, when required.Attend and contribute in staff meetings and team briefing.To attend and contribute to appropriate meetings with other hospitals.Maintain documents in accordance to the policies and procedures of Blackrock Clinic.Identify and make suggestions for continuous quality improvementsHealth & Safety Comply with Health and Safety policies and procedures which includes ensuring equipment used on the service is maintained to the required standard and defects are reported to appropriate authorities as soon as possible.Implement agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice and in line with the ISO 15189 standards.Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others.Be aware of Risk Management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action.Report any adverse incidents or near misses.Adhere to department policies in relation to the Care and Safety of any equipment.Collection of Laboratory waste as determined by laboratory protocol to include disposal of specimens. Disinfection and cleaning of equipment and benches according to laboratory protocol.Professional Expectations Function within the limits of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Scientist, National/International standards and the hospitals’ policies, procedures and standards.Demonstrate flexibility by assisting in other areas of the service as required.Set annual goals and objectives with head of department.Continue to develop personal knowledge and skills. Participates in CPD at the level required by CORU and laboratory management.Provide direct supervision to other members of the team when appropriate.Participate in working groups to develop and promote quality management and operational   processes to the standards of “best Practice”, within the Blackrock Clinic in order to optimise use of resources and performance.Participate in the education of trainees and assist with the orientation of new personnel.Present a professional appearance and be punctual.Maintain throughout the hospital awareness of the privacy and confidentiality of the patient in relation to all hospital activities.Participate in departmental audits and actively contribute to the attainment and maintenance of accreditation to ISO 15189 standards and INAB guidelinesContribute to the evaluation and validation of equipment, processes and consumables as required.Ensure there is no involvement in activities that would diminish confidence in the laboratory’s competence, impartiality or integrity and that any potential conflicts in competing interests are appropriately declared.Why work at the Blackrock Clinic:At the Blackrock Clinic, we are passionate about our people and believe in their development and growth.
