Medical Scientist (Blood Sciences - Primary responsibility in Blood Transfusion) Location Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic Job PurposeThe role of a multi-discipline Medical Scientist is to assist with the provision of a quality laboratory service in line with standards of Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic. As a key member of the Pathology laboratory team, the Medical Scientist will demonstrate professional competence, teamwork skills and facilitate effective communication with colleagues in the hospital. The position requires a participatory approach to the development of services and structures , embracing continuous quality improvement and the management of changes necessary to achieve organisational objectives. The role is multidisciplinary in relation to Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood transfusion. Full procedural training will be provided. Job Background/ContextBlackrock Health Hermitage Clinic is a private hospital providing a full range of medical and surgical care across a broad spectrum of specialities. The Laboratory provides a range of inpatient and outpatient services and this role is important in making a significant contribution, developing and maintaining best practice in the Laboratory services. Key Responsibilities · Ensure the efficient and effective delivery of the Laboratory Services for Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic. · Ensure the safe delivery and co-ordination of services for patients, ensuring effective, efficient and quality service. · Participate as required in the training of laboratory staff. · Processing of samples in a multi-discipline environment in relation to Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion. This includes pre-analytical checks, analytical stages, and post analytical stages including reporting. · Ensure that all records are correctly and accurately maintained. · Facilitate effective communication with colleagues, patients, visitors and multi-discipline team as necessary, ensuring patient confidentiality is respected and maintained at all times. · Contribute to the monitoring, recording and investigations for non-conformances and audits· Contribute to ensuring that services are based on the latest research findings and constitute best practice· Identify opportunities for the development of services that will improve the care of patients· Attendance at relevant department and hospital meetings as required Learning and Education · Contribute to the requirements of professional practice · Take personal responsibility for own professional development and keep up to date with evidence based practice and research. · Attend and participate in staff development programmes on an ongoing basis and sharing knowledge with other staff members. · Assist with the orientation and induction of new staff and be available to provide orientation as deemed necessary, helping them to integrate as members of the Unit team. · Assist in the training of staff in the department. · Identify and inform the Learning and Education Team of any training and professional development requirements. · Attend all mandatory training days and ensure that all mandatary training is in date. · Comply with all HR system and policy requirements.Quality Improvement & Risk Management · Ensure that there is compliance with all relevant Blackrock Health Hermitage Clinic guidelines, policies, procedures and relevant legislation and regulatory requirements. This includes responsibility for dealing with regulatory or professional bodies and inspections. · Encourage continuous review and evaluation of policies, guidelines and existing practices through regular audit programmes and review engaging with the multi-disciplinary team where required. · Participate in Internal and External Quality control and assurance programmes · Contribute to promoting a culture of continuous quality improvement across the department involving the team in continuous improvement initiatives and encouraging innovation. · Contribute to the setting and monitoring of core objectives, standards and key performance indicators for the service and monitor performance against these standards through internal and (where applicable) external audit. · Participate in the requirements of the hospitals accreditation process. · Participate in the requirements of the hospital’s risk management programme. · Promote the delivery of a high standard of care to all patients. Encourage evidence-based practice and assist in the dissemination and implementation of research findings. · Work with members of the Multidisciplinary team in devising Standard Operating Procedures for the development of the Unit.
