The College has a national advisory role in relation to medical standards and engages with the Medical Council, Department of Health and Children, the Health Service Executive and the Health Information & Quality Authority among others. As a membership organisation, the ICGP is responsible for providing and supporting the continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,000. The ICGP is the PGTB accredited by the Medical Council to provide professional training for doctors wishing to enter the specialty of General Practice. Job Purpose The aim of this fellowship is to optimise the long-term management of women with a history of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) in a General Practice setting. The fellow will explore the evidence-base for effective interventions in the long-term management of women with GDM and establish what constitutes best practice care in the long-term management of GDM. The fellow will synthesise the evidence generated to create a suite of pragmatic education and training resources for GPs and practice nurses. The GP fellow will spend 2 days/ week in clinical practice in General Practice in Kinsale Medical, Kinsale, Co. Cork under the clinical supervision of Professor Tony Foley and 3 days/week in the Dept. of General Practice, University College Cork working on the academic outputs of the fellowship under the academic supervision of Dr Aisling Jennings. The fellow will be supported by a wider fellowship team comprised of multidisciplinary team of senior clinicians and academics, all of whom have relevant methodological skills or appropriate clinical expertise. Key Result Areas (KRA’s) Conduct and publish a review of the effectiveness of interventions in the long-term management of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM).Develop an update to the ICGP Diabetes Quick Reference Guide to include the management of GDM in General Practice, with a focus on the long-term management of GDM.Conduct a practice-based audit on long term management of GDM in general practice. The audit will assess care provided pre and post the inclusion of GDM in the Chronic Disease Management (CDM).Disseminate the findings of the fellowship at national conferences, in the ICGP Journal Forum and in an ICGP webinar.Gain clinical skills in preventative care and chronic disease management with a focus on diabetes.Person specification The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, expertise and competencies:Essential CriteriaEligible for CSCST MICGP and entry to Specialist Register from date of commencement.On the General Practice Specialist Division of the Irish Medical Council. Desirable Skills/ ExperiencePostgraduate qualification in a relevant areaPrevious research/audit experiencePeer reviewed publicationsPrevious presentation at research conferencesExcellent ICT skillsStrong organisational skillsHas the ability to work to tight deadlines.At ease with presentations both remote and in person.
