Surgical Clinical Nurse Manager I

Overview of RoleThe primary role of CNMII is to provide safe and effective care to patients, he/ she will play a pivotal role in service planning, coordinating, and managing activity and resources within the clinical area. The CNM I in collaboration with the CNMII will co-ordinate and lead in the implementation and provision of quality care.Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to patients within the guidelines laid out by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. Main Duties & Responsibilities Professional /ClinicalThe CNM1 will: Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence based, care planning approach.Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.Be responsible for the co-ordination, assessment, planning, delivery and review of patient care by all staff in designated area.Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines laid out by NMBI (Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland). Participate in team meetings / committees as appropriate, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members as required.Collaborate with patients, family, carers and other staff in treatment / care.Assess, Plan, Implement and Evaluate nursing care by personal involvement and supervising the activities of other qualified nurses.Ensure that the care delivered by team is based on standards, which have been formulated on evidence based practice, and agreed, through hospital policy.Develop and promote good relationships with patients, families and carers and make the ward environmentally welcoming and homely.Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives and goals of the department in conjunction with the line manager.Ensure that all staff are familiar with the use and care of all equipment, and that such equipment is maintained in good working condition.Ensure strict confidentiality of information regarding patients/residents is adhered to.Manage own caseload in accordance with the needs of the post.Encourage evidence based practice, using a care planning approach to nursing care.Participate in teams as appropriate, communicating and working in co-operation with other team members.Communicate verbally and / or in writing results of assessments, treatment / care programs and recommendations to the team and relevant others in accordance with hospital policy.Lean or play an active role in discharge planning of the patient.Assist in providing staff leadership and motivation, which is conducive to good staff relations and work performance  Managerial Responsibilities: The CNM1 will provide the necessary supervision, co-ordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure the optimum delivery of care in the designated area through allocating work fairly and competently and will exercise authority in the running of the assigned area(s) as deputised by the CNM2. Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure by supporting the CNM2 and deputising in his / her absence when required to do so.Manage communication at ward and departmental level and facilitate team building.Provide staff leadership and motivation which is conducive to good working relations and work performance.Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.Lead on practice development within the clinical area.Lead and implement change.Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures.Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangementsTo ensure that the staff development and induction programme for trained and untrained staff is in place for the clinical area. Clinical Governance Participate in innovation and change in the approach to patient care delivery, and contribute to service planning process, based on best practice, particularly in relation to new research findings and advances in treatment.Participate in the setting of professional standards. Understand and co-operate with the need to measure and audit the effectiveness of care given in order to provide quality care.Lead and maintain the principles of clinical governance including quality, risk and health & safety and be individually responsible for clinical governance, risk management and health & safety issues within their own work area.Accurately record and report incidents, near misses and or verbal complaints to appropriate personnel according to Hospital Policy.Participate in the development of policies, procedures and guidelines to support compliance with research best practice.  Accreditation  Will familiarise themselves with policies, procedures and guidelines directly related to their clinical care and area.Assist in the review of Policies, Procedures and Guidelines under the direction of the chapter lead/department manager.Qualification & SkillsBe registered, or eligible for registration in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by NMBI.Be a minimum of 3 years qualified and have previous experience within the relevant environment.Previous management or deputising for CNM2 experience is an advantage.Have completed a Management / Leadership Course or commit to undertake same.Display evidence of continuing professional development.Demonstrate an awareness of HR policies and proceduresWorking knowledge of Microsoft packages is an advantage.Have some experience in change management though a project or process pertaining to the area of workWill play an active role in the continuous improvement programme in the hospital using lean tools and methodology.Possess excellent Communication skills.Demonstrate knowledge of and experience in clinical AuditUPMC is an equal opportunity employer.
