The successful candidate will work closely with Laboratory staff, Clinical staff, Consultant Microbiologist, Laboratory Manager and Administrative staff within Blackrock Clinic. The purpose of this role is to support the delivery of a quality microbiology service in compliance with best practice and the requirements of Blackrock Clinic and to contribute to providing a quality clinical laboratory service tailored to the user needs. Qualifications:a)    Possess an appropriate Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences from an approved Universityorb)    Possess the Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences of the Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street or the Regional Technical College, Cork awarded prior to 1994orc)    Possess a recognised and AMLS approved qualification at least equivalent to (a) or (b) aboved)    CORU Registration is essential  Key Responsibility:1. Professional and technical responsibilities1.1 Perform routine work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the Pathology Manager, Senior Laboratory Staff and Consultant.1.2 Be responsible for the quality of work and carry out all duties in accordance with the clinic policy.1.3 Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information.1.4 Participate as required in the registration, custody and stock level of the laboratory reagents and other materials.1.5 Contribute to the evaluation and validation of equipment, processes and consumables as required.1.6 Participate in training and retraining as required to maintain competence and ensure records of training are maintained.1.7 Provide a safe, comprehensive service based on current standards and research; perform procedures according to established policy and procedures.1.8 Participate in quality assurance by assisting to identify recurrent problems and co-operate in data collection and problem solving using the CAPA module within Q-pulse.1.9 Know and practice within the legal requirements including those set down by The Academy of Medical Laboratory Science and all relevant guidelines including those of INAB.1.10    Support laboratory management in the maintenance of the Quality Management System in accordance with ISO 15189 standards and JCI standards. 2         Communication Skills2.1 Report relevant information verbally and in writing to appropriate personnel following hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.2.2 Respond appropriately and in a timely manner to user requests and enquiries.2.3 Communicate appropriately and openly with colleagues and other members of the team,in a manner that avoids antagonism, reduces conflict and prevents undue anxiety.2.4 Recognise self-limitations and seek assistance, when required.2.5 Attend and contribute in staff meetings and team briefing.2.6 Where required attend and contribute to appropriate meetings with users and referral laboratories.2.7 Review and acknowledge all relevant documents and maintain documents in accordance with the policies and procedures of the laboratory and the hospital.2.8 Identify and make suggestions for continuous quality improvements 3         Health and Safety3.1 Comply with hospital and laboratory Health and Safety policies and procedures whichincludes ensuring equipment is maintained to the required standard and defects are reported to the appropriate authorities as soon as possible.3.2   Review, acknowledge and follow agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice. 3.3   Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others.3.4   Be aware of Risk Management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action.3.5   Report any adverse incidents or near misses to the Safety Officer and/or the Pathology Manager. 3.6   Follow the appropriate procedures for the disposal and collection of clinical and laboratory waste as determined by laboratory policies and procedures.3.7   Perform regular disinfection and cleaning of equipment and benches according to laboratory protocol. 4.   Professional Expectations4.1  Function within the limits of the Academy of Medical Laboratory Scientist, National/International standards and the hospitals’ policies and procedures. 4.2  Support the Mission Statement of Blackrock Clinic. 4.3  Observe appropriate lines of authority.4.4  Demonstrate flexibility by assisting in other areas of the service as required.4.5  Participate in annual joint review and set annual goals and objectives with head of department.4.6  Continue to develop personal knowledge and skills. Actively participate in continuous professional development (CPD) at the level required by the organisation and for CORU registration when in place.4.7  Provide direct supervision to other members of the team when appropriate.4.8  Participate in working groups to develop and promote quality management and operational processes to the standards of “best Practice”, within the Blackrock Clinic in order to optimise the use of resources and performance.4.9  Participate in the education of trainees and assist with the orientation of new personnel.4.10 Present a professional appearance and be punctual.4.11  Maintain throughout the hospital awareness of the privacy and confidentiality of the patient in relation to all hospital activities.4.12 Participate in departmental audits and actively contribute to the attainment and maintenance of accreditation to ISO 15189 standards and INAB guidelines.4.13 Personally and professionally you are accountable to the patient.
